Apple’s job postings indicate a strong commitment to generative AI

Apple, while somewhat late to the generative AI game compared to tech giants like Google and Microsoft, has now shown a significant commitment to integrating this cutting-edge technology into its devices and services. Apple’s initial foray into AI was evident with the introduction of the “Transformer” model-based autocorrect feature in iOS 17. The next sign of their dedication to generative AI is the proliferation of job listings related to specific generative AI roles.
By conducting a search for keywords like AI or generative AI on Apple’s Careers page, one can discover numerous relevant job openings. For example, Apple is actively developing a Generative AI-based developer experience platform for internal use. The company is seeking individuals who will collaborate with Machine Learning engineers, Software engineers, and other data scientists to deliver comprehensive AI solutions for this platform.
Renowned Apple analyst Mark Gurman has also asserted that the company is gearing up to introduce generative AI-powered features across its product range, which includes the iPhone, iPad, and more. According to Gurman, Apple’s executives were caught off guard by the rapid growth of the AI industry, and they have been working diligently since late last year to catch up.
Apple has not been devoid of AI in its products, with the ubiquitous presence of Siri, its machine learning-based virtual assistant, across major offerings such as iPhones, iPads, MacBooks, and the Homepod smart speaker, among others.
Recent reports have indicated that Apple has developed a substantial language model known as Ajax, which forms the foundation of AI models. Ajax is said to power a chatbot named “Apple GPT” and is currently undergoing testing to gauge its functionality. Apple is actively exploring how to integrate this technology into its product lineup.
