Apple Unveils Prototype Robot with Human-Like Movements

Apple has introduced a prototype robot designed to move in a human-like manner, enhancing user interaction through expressive gestures. A short video and a 12-page research paper from Apple Machine Learning Research showcase the robot’s fluid movements, developed under the ELEGNT framework (Expressive and Functional Movement Design for Non-Anthropomorphic Robots).

A Unique, Gesture-Controlled Design

The robot’s design, resembling a lamp, has drawn comparisons to Pixar’s Luxo Jr. It features AI-driven movement that allows it to respond to gesture-based commands. For example, users can wave to bring the light closer or point to adjust its focus. The robot is also capable of contextual actions, such as “looking” out a window to check the weather.

A Step Toward AI-Driven Consumer Robotics

Apple’s research suggests that expression-driven robotic movements significantly improve user engagement, particularly in social interactions. Reports indicate that Apple has been working on robotics innovations since 2024, with speculation that a commercial version could launch by 2026 or 2027, potentially priced around $1,000.

The unveiling of this prototype robot signals Apple’s growing interest in AI-powered hardware. If developed further, it could mark the beginning of a new era in consumer robotics, blending artificial intelligence with functional design to create more intuitive and interactive experiences.
