Government of India Initiates New SIG for Internet Governance

The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY), Government of India, has announced the formation of a Special Interest Group (SIG) on Domain Names and Numbers (SIG-DNN). This initiative aims to create a unified, collaborative, and inclusive framework for Internet governance in India. The SIG will act as a vital link between the government and various stakeholders, ensuring the alignment of policies and fostering a two-way exchange of information, insights, and feedback.

Vision for the SIG-DNN

The SIG-DNN is tasked with addressing critical issues such as:

  • Internationalized Domain Name (IDN) adoption for multilingual accessibility.
  • Governance of country-code Top-Level Domains (ccTLDs) and generic Top-Level Domains (gTLDs).
  • Enhancing DNS privacy and security, including DNS over HTTPS (DoH) and DNS Security Extensions (DNSSEC).
  • Management of IPv6 and Autonomous System Number (ASN) resources.
  • Exploring blockchain innovations for domain ownership.

This group will also position India as a leader in global Internet governance forums such as ICANN (Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers) and APNIC (Asia-Pacific Network Information Centre).

The SIG-DNN comprises distinguished members from various sectors:

  1. Dr. Govind – Ex-CEO of NIXI and Co-founder of InSIG
  2. Mr. Satish Babu – Director of InApp and Chair of APRALO at ICANN
  3. Ms. Amrita Choudhury – Director of CCAOI and Chair of AprIGF
  4. Dr. Ajay Data – Founder and CEO of XgenPlus, and Chair of the NeoBrahmi Generation Panel at ICANN
  5. Mr. Amitabh Singhal – ICANN Board Member
  6. Mr. Mahesh Kulkarni – Former CTO, EVARIS Systems LLP

Ajay Data’s Inclusion in SIG-DNN
