Airbnb Quietly Acquires Connected Sensor Startup Lapka

Airbnb which helps people to list, find, and rent lodging, Lapkahas recently acquired sensor maker Lapka for an undisclosed amount. Following the deal, Lapka will not be manufacturing any new products. Though the financial terms of the deal have not been revealed, Lapka has announced the merger on its official website.

While Lapka is a hardware startup which manufactures sensors, Airbnb is more like a directory. Hence how does Lapka fit the bill, remains a significant question.

Meanwhile, Vadik Marmeladov, CEO and creative director Lapka is all set to “build the most beautiful science ever.”

Marmeladov revealed that he would be joining Airbnb in San Francisco. Although he did not disclose what they would be creating together but calls their next innovation ‘beyond explanation’.

On the other hand, Joe Gebbia, co-founder and chief product officer, Airbnb, said in a statement, “Since the moment Lapka launched their first product, I have been inspired by their impressive design sensibilities – a combination of beauty, form, and story. These guys have tenacity and drive towards creating the future, and I’m thrilled to get to work alongside them at Airbnb to create a world where people can belong anywhere.”
