GeM and BHASHINI Partner to Introduce Multilingual Access in India’s Public Procurement

In a significant move to boost digital inclusion and improve the Ease of Doing Business (EoDB), the Digital India BHASHINI Division (DIBD) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Government e Marketplace (GeM).

Signed under the “BHASHINI for Seva/Sanchalan” initiative, the partnership aims to integrate advanced artificial intelligence-powered translation and generative AI solutions into the GeM portal. This will enable buyers and sellers to interact with public procurement services seamlessly across all 22 officially recognized Indian languages using voice-first technologies.

The Ministry of Electronics and IT (MeitY) noted that the initiative is designed to eliminate language barriers that often isolate smaller businesses. By rolling out specialized digital public infrastructure—including flagship initiatives like BHASHINI Udyat, Mitra, and Appmitra—the collaboration will develop domain-specific language models, localized glossaries, and voice-enabled chatbots.

The move is expected to democratize the national marketplace, allowing micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs), startups, and rural entrepreneurs to access government contracts in their native languages. Additionally, the partnership includes the Bhashadaan initiative to collect and curate regional linguistic datasets, ensuring future-ready digital governance across India.
