In a strategic move to prioritize intentional listening over passive consumption, Spotify has unveiled a suite of new video controls designed to give users absolute command over their visual experience. This update is built on the philosophy that a personalized platform is a more rewarding one, moving beyond simple content delivery to offer a truly customizable environment.
The centerpiece of this rollout is a significant expansion of parental and administrative oversight for Family Plan managers. Starting today, managers can globally toggle video content on or off for all members of their plan, a feature previously restricted to accounts for younger children. This shift ensures that families can curate a consistent listening environment that aligns with their specific preferences or data usage goals.
Furthermore, Spotify is democratizing these controls by extending them to every user on the platform. Whether on a Premium Individual, Duo, Student, or Free ad-supported plan, listeners will soon find new options under the “Content and Display” settings. These settings allow users to independently enable or disable looping “Canvas” visuals, as well as full-form videos for podcasts and music. Once configured, these preferences seamlessly sync across all devices, from mobile and desktop to smart TVs.
The decision to introduce these features stems from internal research and global surveys indicating that over 90% of listeners value features that increase their sense of control. For many, especially younger Gen Z users, the ability to switch to an audio-only mode helps reduce digital fatigue and focuses the experience on mood-boosting audio.
While video advertisements and specific audio-related visuals will remain, this update marks a major step in Spotify’s evolution toward a more “intentional” app design. By allowing the audience to choose between a rich, multi-sensory video experience and a traditional, audio-first focus, Spotify reinforces its mission to let the listener remain in the driver’s seat.
