Google Maps Transforms into Personal Planning Assistant with New Gemini AI ‘Ask Maps’ Feature

Google has officially launched one of its most significant updates to Google Maps in over a decade, introducing a conversational AI feature dubbed “Ask Maps.” Powered by the advanced Gemini AI models, this upgrade shifts the platform from a traditional navigation tool into a sophisticated local discovery and planning assistant.

The Power of Conversational Search

Unlike standard keyword searches, “Ask Maps” allows users to ask complex, natural-language questions such as, “Where can I find a quiet cafe with vegan snacks and a place to charge my phone?” By analyzing data from over 300 million locations and insights from 500 million global contributors, the AI provides summarized, context-aware answers alongside a customized map view. It even remembers user preferences—like a liking for vegetarian food—to further refine its recommendations.

Beyond Navigation: Immersive Driving

The update also debuts “Immersive Navigation,” which offers a 3D visualization of routes. Drivers can now see realistic representations of buildings, terrain, and road details like traffic lights and lane markers. Additionally, voice guidance has been overhauled to sound more natural, using landmarks (e.g., “Turn left after the blue building”) rather than just distances.

Availability in India

The “Ask Maps” feature is currently rolling out on Android and iOS for users in India and the United States. While initially available in English, Google confirmed that support for Hindi and other regional languages is expected soon, making these advanced AI tools accessible to a broader audience across the subcontinent.
