In a major move toward enhancing digital safety for women, Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) has officially rolled out its “Kavach Number” feature. Launched on March 8 to coincide with International Women’s Day 2026, this innovative tool is designed to eliminate the risks associated with sharing personal mobile numbers in public spaces.
Privacy in the Public Eye For many women, simple tasks like visiting a retail store for a mobile recharge or providing a contact number at a billing counter can be a source of anxiety. Sharing a personal number often leads to unsolicited calls, spam, and potential harassment. BSNL’s Kavach (meaning “shield” or “armor”) aims to solve this by providing a temporary identity for these public interactions.
How the Kavach System Works The service functions by generating a unique 10-digit virtual or alternate number via SMS. This secondary number is internally linked to the user’s primary Aadhaar-registered SIM but acts as a protective proxy.
When a user needs to perform a recharge at a third-party outlet, she can provide the Kavach Number instead of her private digits. The transaction is processed successfully, but the retailer never gains access to her actual personal contact details.
