In a significant departure from its long-standing “walled garden” approach, Apple is reportedly preparing to allow external, voice-controlled artificial intelligence chatbots to integrate with its CarPlay interface. This move, first reported by Bloomberg, marks a major strategic shift for the tech giant, which has historically restricted voice commands within vehicles exclusively to its own assistant, Siri.
Breaking Siri’s Exclusivity
According to sources familiar with the matter, Apple plans to open the door for AI powerhouses like OpenAI, Anthropic, and Google. These companies will soon be able to release CarPlay-compatible versions of their apps, such as ChatGPT, Claude, and Gemini, specifically optimized for hands-free voice interaction. For the first time, drivers will be able to perform complex queries—ranging from detailed restaurant recommendations to deep technical explanations—directly through their car’s infotainment system.
Operational Limits and Safety
While this update expands functionality, Apple is maintaining strict control over the user experience to ensure safety and brand consistency. Users will not be able to replace the primary Siri button or the default wake word. Instead, to access a third-party AI, the driver must first open the specific app on the CarPlay screen. However, developers will be given the tools to allow their apps to launch directly into “voice mode” upon being opened, minimizing manual interaction and keeping the driver’s focus on the road.
Why the Change?
The decision comes as consumers increasingly demand more capable AI assistants that outperform Siri’s current limitations in complex reasoning and information retrieval. While Apple is simultaneously working on its own “Apple Intelligence” upgrades for Siri, this move ensures that CarPlay remains the preferred interface for drivers, even those who rely on rival AI services. The update is expected to roll out to users within the next few months via an upcoming iOS software update.
