BharatGen AI: India’s Indigenous Multilingual Revolution to Cover 22 Languages by Month-End

In a major stride toward digital inclusivity, Union Minister Jitendra Singh has announced that BharatGen, India’s pioneering government-backed generative AI initiative, will complete its text service rollout in all 22 scheduled Indian languages by the end of February 2026. This ambitious project, led by IIT Bombay under the National Mission on Interdisciplinary Cyber-Physical Systems (NM-ICPS), is designed to ensure that the benefits of the AI revolution are not restricted to English speakers but reach every corner of the country in native dialects.

A Sovereign AI for a Diverse Nation

Unlike global AI models that are primarily trained on Western datasets, BharatGen is a “multimodal” and “multilingual” foundational model built specifically for the Indian context. By focusing on data sovereignty, the project ensures that India’s cultural nuances, linguistic diversity, and sensitive public data remain within the country’s borders. The Minister emphasized that the primary goal is to provide high-quality, technically accurate AI services in languages ranging from Hindi and Bengali to Santhali and Dogri.

Social Impact and Real-World Application

BharatGen is not just a chatbot; it is a tool for social transformation. The government plans to integrate these AI services into critical sectors such as healthcare, agriculture, and rural education. For instance, farmers will be able to receive real-time weather and crop advice in their local dialects, and students in remote areas can access educational content translated accurately by AI that understands regional contexts.

Technical Backbone

The project leverages India’s high-performance computing (HPC) infrastructure and a “Citizen-Centric” data collection approach. By month-end, the text-to-text capabilities will be fully operational, with speech-to-speech and other multimodal features expected to follow. This milestone positions India as a global leader in sovereign AI development, proving that technological self-reliance (Atmanirbhar Bharat) is the key to empowering a billion citizens in the digital age.
