Snapchat Introduces Paid Storage for Memories, Users Urged to Backup Content

Snapchat, long celebrated for its disappearing messages, playful filters, and interactive features, is making a significant change to its popular “Memories” feature. The company has announced that users who exceed a certain storage threshold will now need to pay to keep their photos and videos stored on Snapchat’s cloud. This update affects millions of users who have amassed large collections over the years, raising concerns about costs, privacy, and long-term accessibility.

Currently, Snapchat allows users to save photos and videos in Memories for free. However, as usage has surged and server demands have increased, the app will now implement storage plans for those who exceed 5GB of saved content. Users staying under this limit will continue to enjoy free access, but heavy users must either subscribe or download their content.

Snapchat has rolled out new storage plans under its paid services: 100GB and 250GB options are available via Snapchat+, while a premium plan, Snapchat Platinum, offers up to 5TB of storage. To ease the transition, the platform will provide 12 months of temporary storage for users exceeding the 5GB limit, giving them time to either upgrade their plan or download their Memories. Specific pricing details and the exact start date for the subscription haven’t been confirmed yet.

For those unwilling to pay for additional storage, Snapchat provides options to download Memories directly to your device. Users can save individual Snaps by opening Memories, selecting the desired Snaps, and tapping the Export option to store them in a phone gallery or preferred location. Alternatively, users can back up all data, including Memories, by visiting Snapchat’s official My Data portal online. This allows users to select a date range, request a full export, and receive a downloadable .zip folder containing all content.

This move reflects a broader trend in social media, where platforms are monetizing previously free services such as storage and personalization features. Snapchat joins the ranks of Google Photos and iCloud, making it clear that maintaining extensive digital archives comes at a cost.

Since its launch in 2016, Memories has been more than just a storage feature—it serves as a curated digital diary for users, preserving important moments distinct from a standard camera roll cluttered with random photos and screenshots. With over a trillion Memories saved worldwide, the feature has become an essential tool for users to capture and relive their favorite moments.

Snapchat’s new policy underscores the importance of managing your digital content proactively. Users are encouraged to back up their Memories to personal devices or alternative cloud services to ensure long-term access, especially as the platform transitions to a paid model.
