In this exclusive interview, Mr. Mitesh Shah shares how MITSUMI evolved from a small computer reseller in Kenya to a leading technology distributor operating across 34 countries. He discusses the company’s strategic growth, its focus on cloud, AI, cybersecurity, and enterprise solutions, and how localized expertise and global partnerships are driving innovation and digital acceleration across Africa and beyond.

IT Voice- How has MITSUMI Distribution grown over the years, and what has been its journey to becoming a prominent name in the IT distribution sector?

Mitesh ShahMITSUMI Distribution’s journey began in 1998 in Kenya, as a computer reseller under the name Mitsumi Computer Garage Ltd. founded alongside my brother and co-founder, Jagat Shah. What began as a modest venture gradually grew with our shared vision and perseverance. In 2003, we expanded to Dubai, UAE, laying the foundation for MITSUMI with a mission to deliver cost-effective technologies to the region.

In the 27+ years since, we have grown from a single-country operation into a trusted distributor across 30+ countries in Africa, the Middle East, and Europe. Between 2000 and 2022, we executed a carefully planned expansion strategy, expanding MITSUMI’s geographic presence and diversifying its service offerings across the MEA region. Our success has been driven by strategic market entry, organic expansion, and partnerships with leading global technology brands. From those early days, we have steadily transformed MITSUMI into one of the leading technology distributors across the MEA region.

Today, we work with over 40 global partners to deliver hardware, telecom, networking, enterprise, and storage solutions. What sets us apart is our ability to combine cost-effective solutions, strong vendor relationships, and localized operations—positioning MITSUMI as one of the leading technology distributors in MEA —all while upholding operational excellence across diverse markets.

IT Voice- What are the core strengths of MITSUMI, and how do its diverse business verticals contribute to its success?

This localized approach ensures accessibility, trust, and market relevance.

Our success is powered by a highly diversified business model spanning IT, telecom, AI, and enterprise distribution. Beyond distribution, we provide integrated financing solutions, leverage market intelligence, and offer advanced communication technologies. Through Repair Junction, we serve as an Authorized Service Provider (ASP) for Dell Technologies, HP, Lenovo, and Canon—extending our value chain beyond traditional distribution.

Today, we proudly support over 3,200 partners across the region, delivering enterprise software, cloud, mobility, and emerging technologies. We see ourselves not just as distributors, but as complete technology enablers—driving growth and innovation for our partners.

Unlike traditional distributors, we go beyond transactions by offering flexible credit options, specialized sales teams, and robust training and marketing support. Our goal is to empower partners with the right resources to drive expertise, innovation, and long-term growth—building trust and creating a resilient ecosystem.

What further sets us apart is our comprehensive portfolio of IT, telecom, and enterprise products from 40+ global technology brands. Coupled with our in-country presence model and a 100,000 sq. ft. logistics hub in Jebel Ali, Dubai, we ensure efficient supply chain management, operational excellence, and localized support. This combination of cutting-edge technology, strategic partnerships, and regional insight enables us to deliver not just products, but end-to-end solutions—making MITSUMI a preferred technology partner across MEA.

IT Voice- Can you share how the company has expanded over the years in terms of geography, partnerships, and business segments?

Mitesh Shah- MITSUMI’s expansion has been a deliberate and strategic process, guided by a clear vision to become the leading technology enabler across the MEA region. Today, we operate in 34 countries across Africa, the Middle East, and Europe.

Geographically, our journey began in Kenya in 1998, where we quickly established ourselves as a leading IT distribution and services provider—laying the foundation for our regional expansion. In June 2023, we strengthened our African presence by opening an office in Casablanca, Morocco. Most recently, in 2025, we expanded into Southern Africa with operations across Namibia, Botswana, Zambia, Zimbabwe, and Mozambique. This move not only doubled our local workforce but also enabled us to introduce extensive partner enablement programs. Since then, we have advanced rapidly—onboarding new vendors and conducting partner enablement sessions across key markets. Our growth strategy is built on leveraging local expertise, respecting cultural nuances, and fostering sustainable ecosystems. By establishing regional hubs that serve multiple countries, we remain close to our partners and customers, ensuring agility, responsiveness, and effective service delivery.

Partnerships have always been at the heart of our growth. We began with a handful of vendors and have steadily built a network of over 40 leading global technology brands, including Dell Technologies, HP, and Lenovo. These relationships are vital, enabling us to deliver cutting-edge products and services to local markets.

From our origins as a hardware reseller, we have evolved into a full-fledged technology distributor. Our portfolio now spans not only volume products like PCs and peripherals but also value-added solutions such as cloud, cybersecurity, networking, and enterprise technologies. This transformation into a multi-vertical distributor with a strong focus on emerging technologies allows us to serve the complex needs of modern businesses while driving sustained growth and market leadership.

Mitesh Shah- At MITSUMI, we believe our growth is inseparable from the growth of our partners. That’s why we go beyond a transactional relationship to provide a robust framework of support, including dedicated sales teams, product specialists, and tailored go-to-market assistance.

We invest heavily in partner enablement through training, marketing support, product launches, digital campaigns, demand generation, and industry events. By collaborating with 40+ global technology brands, we are building an integrated ecosystem that delivers next-generation solutions. Our continuous portfolio expansion ensures partners have access to the latest technologies, while our collaborative approach fosters mutual growth and empowers businesses to scale in today’s digital economy.

IT Voice- How do you see the global IT tech industry evolving in the coming years, and what opportunities or challenges does this create for distributors?

Mitesh Shah- The global IT industry is undergoing a major transformation driven by advancements in AI, automation, cloud computing, and growing sustainability imperatives. The global IT distribution market stood at USD 452 billion in 2024, with the top 15 distributors commanding 61% of the market and growing by 3.8% year-on-year despite challenging economic conditions.

AI, machine learning, and advanced analytics are enabling real-time insights into market trends and supply chains, while automation and robotics are reshaping distribution through autonomous vehicles, robotic warehouses, and smart logistics. By 2024, half of all supply chain organizations had invested in AI-powered applications to enhance efficiency and resilience.

At the same time, rising demand from generative AI, robotics, and immersive environments is placing new pressures on global infrastructure. Sustainability has also become a priority, with omni-channel strategies evolving to meet consumer expectations across digital and physical platforms. The industry’s challenge is to balance digital transformation and innovation with supply chain resilience, cybersecurity, and regulatory compliance.

IT Voice- What are the emerging trends you foresee shaping the global IT distribution sector in the near future?

Mitesh Shah- The global IT distribution sector is entering a new era where technology, customer expectations, and sustainability are reshaping the landscape. I see five key trends driving this transformation.

First, AI and automation will become central to operations—enabling smarter supply chains, predictive inventory management, and improved customer engagement. Second, the surge in cloud adoption and data centre expansion, accelerated by generative AI and compute-intensive workloads, will open new opportunities for distributors to deliver scalable infrastructure solutions. Third, cybersecurity will remain a top priority, as evolving digital threats demand end-to-end, integrated security offerings.

Fourth, I believe sustainability and green tech will move from being optional to becoming business-critical, with distributors expected to build eco-friendly supply chains and champion responsible technology adoption. Finally, ecosystem-driven models—where partnerships, value-added services, and enablement programs are as important as product distribution—will define the leaders in this sector.

At MITSUMI, we are aligning closely with these trends to not only meet market demand but to help shape the future of distribution itself.

IT Voice- How is MITSUMI leveraging artificial intelligence (AI) to transform business operations and deliver value across various sectors?

Mitesh Shah- At MITSUMI, we view AI as a catalyst for efficiency, innovation, and enhanced decision-making – both within our business and for the partners we serve. Internally, we use AI-driven analytics and predictive modeling to optimize supply chains, forecast demand, streamline inventory, and enhance logistics. This proactive approach strengthens resilience and precision across our extensive network.

Beyond our own operations, we are helping partners harness AI to drive business growth. Through our Strategic Value Division, we provide AI-powered business intelligence platforms, automation tools, and machine learning solutions that enable organizations to optimize efficiency, personalize customer experiences, and unlock competitive advantages.

For us, AI is not just about technology—it is about empowering businesses and communities with smarter, scalable, and future-ready solutions.

IT Voice- What is the future outlook and long-term vision for MITSUMI Distribution as it continues to grow and expand globally?

Mitesh Shah- At MITSUMI, our boldest bet is transforming into a full-service digital distribution platform. This means integrating cloud services and SaaS bundling, delivering vertical market solutions such as edu-tech and health-tech, and offering financing-as-a-service and logistics support to empower our reseller network. We are also enabling regional market entry for global technology brands, while building stronger channels in underserved cities and investing heavily in partner enablement.

Looking ahead, our vision is to be the preferred technology enabler across MEA—fueling Africa’s digital acceleration, driving innovation ecosystems, and supporting SMEs in their growth journeys. We will continue to expand our portfolio in cloud, cybersecurity, AI, networking, and enterprise solutions, while forging new vendor partnerships that strengthen the technology value chain.

Our long-term strategy is centred on digital transformation leadership, sustainable technology solutions, and resilient supply chains that create long-term impact. Ultimately, our goal is not only to scale as a business but also to empower enterprises and communities across Africa to succeed in the digital economy.
