In a landmark step towards developing an industry-ready, future-focused telecom workforce, Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) has signed strategic Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) with four global technology leaders — Ericsson India Pvt. Ltd., Qualcomm Technologies Inc., Cisco Systems, and Nokia Solutions and Networks India Pvt. Ltd. The collaboration is aimed at accelerating India’s digital transformation and building advanced capabilities in 5G, Artificial Intelligence/Machine Learning (AI/ML), networking, and digital technologies.
The MoUs were signed in New Delhi in the presence of Hon’ble Union Minister of Communications and DoNER, Shri Jyotiraditya M. Scindia, Secretary (Telecom) Dr. Neeraj Mittal, senior Department of Telecommunications (DoT) officials, BSNL leadership, and senior representatives from partner companies.
This initiative will be implemented at BSNL’s apex training institute — the Bharat Ratna Bhim Rao Ambedkar Institute of Telecom Training (BRBRAITT) in Jabalpur. It is part of a broader DoT plan to establish the Telecom Innovation, Research and Training Centre (TIRTC) at BRBRAITT. Envisioned as an industry-led national hub, the TIRTC will focus on nurturing telecom-specific R&D talent, fostering innovation, and creating a future-ready workforce aligned with the Hon’ble Prime Minister’s vision of Skill India and Atmanirbhar Bharat.
Four Global Tech Giants, One National Vision
Ericsson India will help establish a dedicated Ericsson 5G Centre of Excellence at BRBRAITT, providing both hands-on and online 5G training to over 2,000 students annually. The on-site training will be supported by BSNL’s classroom infrastructure, while online learning will be delivered through the Ericsson Educate Program, featuring global-standard curriculum, trainers, and lab facilities. This will create a world-class learning environment and expose Indian students to cutting-edge telecom technologies.
Qualcomm Technologies Inc. will set up a Qualcomm Institute at BRBRAITT, focusing on advanced 5G and AI training for students, BSNL trainers, and government stakeholders. The initiative will combine premium online courses, live interactive sessions, and internship opportunities. In its inaugural year, Qualcomm will sponsor training for the first 100 participants, positioning BRBRAITT as a national hub for scalable, industry-relevant digital skill development.
Cisco Systems will extend its Cisco Networking Academy Program to BSNL’s initiative, enhancing skills in networking, cybersecurity, and IT infrastructure. Cisco will offer free access to its globally recognized online curriculum and digital tools, while BSNL will coordinate implementation in non-profit educational institutions across the country. This aims to democratize access to high-quality digital learning and prepare a job-ready youth workforce.
Nokia Solutions and Networks India Pvt. Ltd. will support the establishment of a 5G Centre of Excellence and an AI/ML Lab at BRBRAITT. The programme will train 300 students annually in 5G radio, core network systems, and AI/ML applications, and will offer a joint certification programme in collaboration with the Telecom Sector Skill Council.
Driving India’s Digital Ambitions
Union Minister Shri Jyotiraditya M. Scindia hailed the partnerships as “a landmark step in building a skilled and future-ready telecom workforce,” emphasizing that the initiative reflects the government’s commitment to fostering innovation, entrepreneurship, and digital empowerment through strong industry-academia collaborations.
Industry leaders echoed this sentiment. Nitin Bansal, Managing Director of Ericsson India, stated, “This collaboration is an investment in building a future-ready workforce to lead innovation in 5G, IoT, and advanced telecom technologies.”
These collaborations directly support India’s flagship missions — Digital India, Skill India, Make in India, Startup India, and Atmanirbhar Bharat. By aligning with the country’s broader telecom and technology vision, the initiative will ensure that the Indian workforce remains competitive in the global digital economy.
Long-Term Impact
The partnerships are not limited to skill development alone. The long-term vision is to create a strong ecosystem for telecom innovation, research, and entrepreneurship. TIRTC is expected to become a hub for product prototyping, testing, and commercialization, while also driving cross-industry collaboration between domestic enterprises, startups, and global tech leaders.
By equipping India’s youth with advanced skills in 5G, AI, networking, and cybersecurity, this initiative will not only address the immediate talent needs of the telecom sector but also contribute to India’s ambition of becoming a global leader in next-generation digital technologies.
In the years ahead, BSNL and its partners aim to expand the consortium to include more Indian and international stakeholders, ensuring continuous innovation, skill enhancement, and sustainable growth in the country’s telecom and digital ecosystem.
