Microsoft is reportedly working on a new “Smart Mode” for its AI-powered Copilot assistant, which could debut in tandem with OpenAI’s next-generation model, GPT-5. According to a recent report by TestingCatalog, the Smart Mode is designed to automatically determine when a query requires deep reasoning versus when a quick response will suffice — streamlining the user experience by eliminating the need to manually switch between models.
A Unified AI Experience in the Works
The move comes as AI developers increasingly release multiple large language models (LLMs) tailored for specific tasks such as reasoning, vision, web browsing, or code generation. Many chatbots, including Copilot, offer a model-switching feature — often a dropdown menu — that allows users to select the most suitable LLM for their needs. However, this system is becoming increasingly complex and cluttered, making navigation inconvenient.
OpenAI CEO Sam Altman addressed this issue earlier in the year, stating that the goal with GPT-5 is to merge the capabilities of the GPT series and the reasoning-focused o-series into a single, powerful model. “We hate the model picker as much as you do,” Altman said, emphasizing the desire for “magic unified intelligence” that simply works without user intervention.
What Is Smart Mode?
According to TestingCatalog, traces of the Smart Mode feature have been discovered in Copilot’s code, though it remains inaccessible to the public and even beta testers. The publication managed to activate the feature and revealed that it appears in the chatbot’s dropdown menu alongside existing modes such as “Quick Response,” “Think Deeper,” and “Deep Research.”
The description for Smart Mode reportedly states it “uses GPT-5 to think quickly or deeply,” suggesting that it dynamically adapts its response style based on the context of the query. While the exact mechanics remain unclear due to the feature being inactive, its integration signals Microsoft’s intent to offer a more seamless and intuitive AI interaction.
Although Microsoft has not officially confirmed the rollout, it is speculated that Smart Mode will become available once OpenAI releases GPT-5. The feature is expected to reduce user confusion over model selection and enhance productivity by automatically delivering the right depth of response.
