Qualcomm Introduces Three New Snapdragon G Series Chips for Handheld Gaming

Qualcomm has unveiled its latest Snapdragon G Series lineup, designed for handheld gaming devices. The new series includes the Snapdragon G3 Gen 3, Snapdragon G2 Gen 2, and Snapdragon G1 Gen 2 chipsets, all aimed at enhancing gaming performance on Android-based handheld consoles. The company promises better graphics, stronger performance, and improved connectivity with these new processors.

Snapdragon G3 Gen 3: The Flagship Gaming Chip

Leading the lineup, the Snapdragon G3 Gen 3 is the most powerful among the three, though it does not include Qualcomm’s latest Oryon CPU or Adreno 830 GPU, which are found in its top-tier smartphone chips. However, it still delivers significant improvements over its predecessor, with Qualcomm reporting a 30% increase in CPU performance and a 28% boost in graphics power.

Additionally, the G3 Gen 3 is the first Snapdragon G Series processor to support Lumen, Unreal Engine 5’s advanced lighting and reflections system. It also enables QHD+ resolution at 144Hz and features Wi-Fi 7 and Bluetooth 5.3 via Qualcomm’s FastConnect 7800 system.

Snapdragon G2 Gen 2: Optimized for Gaming & Cloud Gaming

Replacing its predecessor, the Snapdragon G2 Gen 2 is tailored for both traditional and cloud gaming. Qualcomm claims it delivers up to 2.3 times better CPU performance and a 3.8 times faster GPU, thanks to the inclusion of the Adreno A22 GPU. Like the G3 Gen 3, this chipset supports QHD+ at 144Hz and offers Wi-Fi 7, reducing latency for smoother online gaming.

Snapdragon G1 Gen 2: Entry-Level Chip for Cloud Gaming

Designed for budget-friendly handhelds, the Snapdragon G1 Gen 2 still brings notable upgrades over its predecessor. Qualcomm reports an 80% boost in CPU performance and a 25% increase in GPU power. It now supports up to FHD+ resolution at 120Hz, doubling the refresh rate compared to the previous generation.

Exclusive Features and Supported Devices

Only the Snapdragon G3 Gen 3 and G2 Gen 2 will support Snapdragon Game Super Resolution and Adreno Frame Motion Engine 2.0, both of which enhance frame rates and visual quality.

Qualcomm confirmed that several upcoming handheld gaming devices will feature these new chips:

  • Snapdragon G3 Gen 3 will power Ayaneo’s Pocket S2 and Gaming Pad as well as OneXPlayer’s OneXSugar.
  • Snapdragon G2 Gen 2 will debut in Retroid’s next-gen handheld, likely the Retroid Pocket 6.
  • Snapdragon G1 Gen 2 will be used in the Retroid Pocket Classic, a Game Boy-style handheld with a 3.92-inch AMOLED display.

“These next-generation Snapdragon G Series processors will shape the future of handheld gaming, supporting a variety of gaming experiences and form factors for manufacturers and developers,” said Micah Knapp, Senior Director of Product Management at Qualcomm Technologies Inc. Devices powered by the new Snapdragon G Series chips are expected to launch later this quarter.
