Google Pay has announced that it will begin charging a convenience fee for bill payments made using credit and debit cards, while UPI transactions will remain free. The fee, which ranges between 0.5% and 1% of the total transaction amount, will be displayed at checkout, allowing users to see the additional cost before proceeding with payment.
This move brings Google Pay in line with other major digital payment platforms such as Paytm, PhonePe, and Amazon Pay, which already impose similar charges. Paytm refers to its fee as a “platform fee”, justifying it as a way to cover operational costs. Amazon Pay charges 2.183% for Mastercard transactions and 1.18% for most other credit cards, while PhonePe applies fees on bill payments for specific service providers.
The introduction of these charges may encourage users to shift towards UPI payments, which continue to be fee-free. With the increasing adoption of digital payments, platforms are adjusting their revenue models, leading to additional costs for consumers relying on card-based transactions.
While the new policy may not impact all users, those who regularly pay bills using credit or debit cards might need to reconsider their payment methods to avoid extra charges. As the digital payments landscape evolves, users must stay informed about the changing fee structures across different platforms.
