Instagram Tests Private Dislike Button to Curb Toxic Comments

Instagram is experimenting with a new “dislike” button for comments on posts and Reels, aiming to reduce negativity and create a more constructive online environment. The feature, currently in the testing phase, will allow users to privately express disapproval of comments without displaying dislike counts publicly.

Prioritizing Positive Interactions

According to Instagram head Adam Mosseri, who confirmed the development on Threads, the dislike feature will help improve comment ranking algorithms by demoting toxic, offensive, or unhelpful comments. By doing so, Instagram hopes to promote more meaningful discussions while limiting negative interactions. This approach mirrors YouTube’s strategy, which removed public dislike counts in 2021 to prevent harassment and brigading.

The dislike button is being tested with a small group of users before a potential global rollout. Instagram will monitor how the feature impacts engagement and community interactions before making a final decision on widespread implementation.

Strengthening Safety Measures for Teens

In addition to this test, Instagram’s parent company, Meta, has also introduced new safety measures for teen users. The platform has launched “Teen Accounts” in India, incorporating stricter privacy settings, messaging restrictions, and enhanced parental controls. These updates aim to protect young users from online risks by giving them a safer digital space.

With these adjustments, Instagram continues its mission to enhance user experience by minimizing toxicity and encouraging healthy discussions.
