Apple’s Game Porting toolkit update make PC games run faster on macOS

Apple’s latest macOS Sonoma comes with a Game Porting toolkit designed to assist developers in bringing their Windows games to the Mac platform. The toolkit, still in beta, has received a significant update with version 1.0.2, which brings improvements in performance.

While Apple has not provided official release notes detailing the changes, Mac developers have noticed several enhancements. The statistics panel now displays “v0.2” to indicate the Rosetta line during gameplay, a change from the previous release. The file size of the toolkit has also been reduced to 27.9 MB, a notable improvement from the original 53.4 MB.

Nat Brown, a manager for Apple’s toolkit, has mentioned updates addressing issues related to 32-bit support, rendering, stability, and performance improvements. The team had initially intended to provide detailed change logs, but due to time constraints over the holiday weekend, they were unable to do so.

According to YouTuber Andrew Tsai, games like “Elden Ring” running on the M1 Max chip showed a 20% performance improvement with the updated toolkit. “Arkham Knight” exhibited similar performance levels before and after the update, although the results may vary depending on the specific game and chip being used. The new toolkit also enabled “Cyberpunk 2077” to achieve nearly double the frame rate on the high-end M2 Ultra chip.

Previously, certain games would experience crashes when playing video cutscenes with specific codecs. However, the update has resolved these issues, ensuring proper functionality in most cases.

However, the YouTuber encountered some difficulties with the Game Porting Tool on Apple’s M1 Ultra and M2 Ultra chips, as some games performed better on less powerful chips. This discrepancy might be due to the UltraFusion technology utilized in the Ultra chips, which combines two Max chips into one. It is possible that the tool does not fully support this technology yet.
