Samsung launches Exynos 5 Series 7872 processor for mid-range smartphones

Samsung has already revealed its Exynos 9 series 9810 processor, which is likely to debut in its flagship smartphone, the Galaxy S9 later this year. Now, in an attempt to further tighten its grip over the chip market, the South Korean technology giant has announced Exynos 5 Series 7872 processor. As one can guess, this is not as powerful as the Exynos 9 series and hence is aimed at mid-range smartphones.

The company said that with Exynos 5 Series 7872 processor, it will bring the performance of flagship smartphones down to mid-range handsets. The processor is made using 14-nanometer (nm) FinFET process technology and has a 6-core CPU configured with two 2.0GHz ARM Cortex A-73 and four 1.6GHz Cortex A-53 cores.

“With the addition of powerful CPU, the Exynos 7872 improves the individual single-core performance by two folds, when compared to its predecessor, enabling faster web browsing, app launching and other operations on a smartphone in its class,” says the firm.

The Exynos 5 Series 7872 processor also includes LTE modem that can support up to two carriers with highest downlink and uplink speeds of 300Mbps and 150Mbps respectively. Also integrated are connectivity features including Wi-Fi and Bluetooth 5. Some of the other features include upgraded ISP and MFC for video encoding and decoding at 120fps with HEVC(H.265) and H.264 codecs , using 21.7MP camera.

“The Exynos processor is dedicated to bring innovative technologies for mobile devices across all levels of performance. With large improvements in CPU, GPU, LTE modem, and ISP, the Exynos 7872 will change and improve the current perception of the mid-range devices,” concludes the company post.

Although it has not been mentioned when or in which devices Samsung plans to introduce this chipset, we assume that the processor may debut in any of the Galaxy A, Galaxy C or Galaxy J series in 2018.
