There is never a dull moment in the world of social media. Today the American social media company Twitter has launched the Spaces feature for android users worldwide. Twitter’s Spaces will directly challenge Clubhouse’s first launch advantage.

What is Clubhouse?

Alpha Exploration Co.’s Paul Davison and Rohan Seth launched Clubhouse in April 2020 during the pandemic. It is an invitation-only audio chat mobile application. By January 2021, the valuation of Clubhouse was $1 Billion. The clubhouse is available for iPhone users only thus limiting the number of users. However, the android version is in the development phase as per the company.

According to an official announcement made today by Twitter, it would be rolling out the Spaces feature for all android users soon.

The Tweet said, “Android folks, our beta is growing! Starting today you will be able to join and talk in any Space. SOON you’ll be able to create your own but we’re still working out some things. Keep your eyes out for live Spaces above your home tl (timeline),”

Spaces feature will allow the users to communicate through voice-based messages. The clubhouse was the first to launch the voice-based communication application. But now will have to face a tough challenge from the social media giant.

Twitter was testing the feature for some months. The company is gathering feedback from the beta users before it can launch the feature on a wider scale for everyone. Twitter is vigilant towards the moderation and abuse point of view. Even the feature was initially offered to the marginalized communities and women who are more likely to be threatened or harassed. Now, the feedback will be used to improve the Spaces service for a secure and safer service.

In December 2020 Twitter first announced Spaces. Initially, it was available for iOS users only. Now, Android users can also access the features available through Spaces. Similar to Clubhouse, you need an invitation to start a conversation. Once someone has invited you to a conversation through voice-based Spaces, you will see a notification on your timeline.

Twitter will be at an advantage against Clubhouse?

Compared to 192 active million active users of the microblogging site Twitter, Clubhouse has only 10 million users. Twitter will definitely be in an advantageous position in this aspect as Twitter will be able to increase the reach and visibility of Spaces. Additionally, Clubhouse has not launched its beta versions for android users yet which is the world’s largest mobile operating system. It will hamper the growth of Clubhouse. On the other hand, Twitter will be able to capitalize to add new users for Spaces.
