Ubuntu Touch Takes A Step Closer To Perfection

38lL45940PM992013Ubuntu Touch development builds now have over-the-air updates. According to recent reports on OMGUbuntu, supported Nexus devices will have the ability to check for and get free updates for the operating system.

Testers for the phone have till now had to apply updates manually. This is done by flashing newer images to a device through the phablet flash command line tool. Now though, updates can be pushed over the air and applied directly to the phone through its system settings.

The implementation of the system though isn’t completely smooth yet. For example, the Update panel in the Ubuntu Touch phones can get you access to the update, but it has no progress bar, which can convey the status of the downloads. Your update will be downloading but you won’t know how long it’ll take.

The first version of the Ubuntu Touch is scheduled to be released in October 2013. According to reports, there will be four Nexus devices that will be supported at the launch. These include the Samsung Galaxy Nexus and the Nexus 4 smartphones. In addition, there will be the Nexus 7 and 10 tablet devices.

The Ubuntu Touch Ports project will then take over and deal with other phones in this segment.
