This feature may give Vivo the ‘edge’ over Samsung

Vivo, one of the top smartphone makers in the world, seems to be at par with other popular brands in terms of innovation. The company, as reported by The Forbes website, is already testing one of the most talked-about Android features – on-screen fingerprint sensor.

Although Vivo has not yet made anything official, a popular analyst, Patrick Moorhead got his hands on the device using the tech and confirmed its existence on Twitter.

In case you missed it, Vivo is using Synaptics‘s newest on-screen fingerprint sensor, which was revealed few days ago. The company that manufactures touch controllers, display drivers and more, said that the component is already in mass production stage with one of the top five OEM, which in all probability could be Samsung. However, after Moorhead’s tweet, it may also prove to be Vivo as it is also one of the top 5 smartphone manufacturers.

The analyst says that the experience “was faster than I expected.” In addition he says that the CMOS image sensor is .7mm thick and reads the fingerprint through an OLED screen. He also indirectly talked about the iPhone X, which relies on FaceID authentication.

“FWIW, this means the user can have an edge-to-edge OLED smartphone and use their finger to open the device without the need for a 3D camera or having the reader on the back of the smartphone,” he said in a separate tweet.

It is worth adding that since the component is said to work on OLED screens, it might as well work on devices such as Galaxy S smartphones, LG G series or the iPhone X.

Synaptics, at the time of the launch, said that the Clear ID FS9500 optical in-display fingerprint sensor works on wet, dry and cold fingers. It is also said to be scratch proof and waterproof since it is covered with a glass. Synaptics claims that the Clear ID is twice as fast as the 3D facial biometrics.

The company will be showcasing a live demo of the new in-display fingerprint sensor at CES 2018. It adds that the particular component will be showcased on a full production, soon to be announced Tier 1 customer phone.
