Samsung To Launch New Exynos 5 Octa Chipset Next Week

imagesSamsung has teased a new Exynos Octa 5 chipset on Twitter that it is believed to launch next week. The company will provide more details about the chipset in the coming days. Samsung’s Twitter page calls the processor Octa evolved, which indicates that that it’s more like a serial upgrade rather than a chipset made by using a completely different architecture.

The current generation Exynos 5 Octa chipset is based on ARM’s big.LITTLE architecture that has four Cortex A7 cores clocked at 1.2GHz, and four Cortex A15 cores clocked at 1.6GHz. The Cortex A7 cores are low power cores that are used to perform regular tasks. The Cortex A15 cores are only involved when extra horsepower is needed as they deliver better performance by consuming more battery power.

As of now, the chipset was only visible on limited versions of the Samsung Galaxy S4, including the Indian model. However, there were complaints regarding its performance. The Octa core nomenclature hints at consumption of more battery as compared to Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 600 chipset that is used in some variants of the Galaxy S4.

Samsung will probably increase the clock speed of the chipset and make it more battery efficient, so that it can compete with leading brands like Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 chipset.

As Samsung is yet to launch the Galaxy Note 3, there is a likelihood of the latest version of Exynos 5 powering it. However, the LTE variant would most probably be powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 800 chipset.
