Samsung Galaxy S9: First set of details revealed

It is that time of the year when the rumours and leaks for the next-generation Samsung flagship smartphone start brewing up. Although there is no confirmation from Samsung, the internet is widely terming the upcoming smartphones to be the Galaxy S9 and the Galaxy S9 Plus .

According to Venture Beat’s Evan Blass, both these smartphones will be making a teaser appearance at the upcoming CES 2018 (Consumer Electronics Show) event. The event is scheduled to take place from January 9-12 in Las Vegas, Nevada, US.

Samsung has one of its events planned on January 8th, according to the full schedule on the CES 2018 website. It is likely that the company will tease the two smartphones at the same time. However, the company will be fully introducing the devices in March.

The VentureBeat report suggests the two smartphones to appear identical, like was in the case with the Galaxy S8 devices. There won’t a major difference in the appearance of the smartphones as they are said to look similar to the Galaxy S8 smartphones.

The Galaxy S9 and the Galaxy S9+ are codenamed Star 1 and Star 2 and carry the model numbers – SM-G960 and SM-G965. The S9 and the S9+ are also said to sport 5.8-inch and 6.2-inch curved edge Super AMOLED ‘InfinityDisplay’ screens like the predecessors.

Upcoming smartphones are likely to run on processors made using 10nm process. This could be both the Snapdragon 845 and the Exynos Series 9 processor.

While the Galaxy S8 and the S8+ were similar in terms of design and specs except for the screen sizes, it won’t be the case with Galaxy S9 devices. The S9+ model is said to feature more RAM (6GB) and a secondary rear camera as compared to the Galaxy S9. Both will come with 64GB inbuilt storage capacity along with the microSD card support.

Unfortunately, both smartphones will be ditching the 3.5mm headphone jack.

Samsung is said to change the rear camera alignment of the Galaxy S9 smartphones, given the criticism it received for the Galaxy S8 and Note 8 devices. This time it could be aligned vertically, with the fingerprint sensor being at the bottom.

In addition to the AKG stereo speakers support, the smartphones may be backwards compatible with DeX docking station.
