RED gives details on its holographic screen for Hydrogen One smartphone

It Seemed like an unrealistic idea when earlier this year RED camera had announced its Hydrogen smartphone with “holographic display”. RED has now announced that it has partnered with a company called Leia Inc. to create the screen. On Leia Inc’s official website, it says, “RED Digital Cinema and Leia Inc. have come together to create a richer way to interact with the people and things you love. Effortlessly dive into a world of new depth and proportions. Available on RED Hydrogen.”
Leia Inc, according to news reports, is a spin-off from Hewlett-Packard labs and calls itself “the leading provider of light field holographic display solutions for mobile.”
For the uninitiated, light field displays use multiple layers of LCDs with a directional backlight. It allows you to see two different views of the same object with each eye, resulting in a 3D effect. RED has formed a strategic partnership with Leia for its Hydrogen smartphone. It says the smartphone will arrive in the first half of 2018, and functional prototypes are supposed to be ready in the coming months.
In July this year, RED had issued a press release announcing its plans for the Hydrogen One smartphone. The press release had little information about the specifications but did mention that would have the 5.7-inch display which uses nanotechnology to “seamlessly switch between traditional 2D content, holographic multi-view content, 3D content, and interactive games.”
The company says the phone will ship in early 2018, and it’s currently available for preorder on RED’s website. It starts at $1,195 for the aluminum version, and there’s also a $1,595 variant made out of titanium.
