Railways to set up multi-purpose Wi-Fi kiosks at stations

As part of Digital India project, the railways is setting up around 1000 Wi-Fi hotspot kiosks at stations to help passengers access an array of online services, including those related to government schemes at reasonable rates.
The multi-purpose kiosks, known as RailWire Saathi, will function like a PCO and enable people to use services like e-commerce, online banking, access to open school or university and insurance schemes, e-ticketing for train and bus services among others.
Automated form filling, mobile and DTH recharge are other services which the Rail wire Saathi is expected to provide in areas with limited connectivity.
As per initial estimates the charges could be Rs 10 for 3060 minutes’ access and monthly plans like Rs 50,100.
The transporter has planned to train and support unemployed youths, preferably women, to run these kiosks. “The multi-purpose kiosks aim to provide platform to online services at cheaper price to common man which doesn’t have access to internet. It will also offer jobs opportunities to the youth,” said a railways official.
Railwire Saathi will install and manage the Wi-Fi hotspots as per the design provided by RailTel, the telecom arm of the railways which is executing the scheme across the country
