OnePlus 5 gets OnePlus 5T’s biggest feature in Android Oreo OxygenOS Open Beta 3

Sticking to its promise, OnePlus has now started rolling out an update to OnePlus 5 users, introducing Face Unlock feature, which was exclusive to OnePlus 5T until now. The feature comes as a part of OxygenOS Open Beta 3 update for the handset. Based on Android Oreo, the Open Beta 3 also includes other system-level changes.
The beta version also includes app shortcut on Launcher, optimizations for vibration, fixed connection issue of 5G Wi-Fi and December security patch.
Since this is a beta version, users might come across some bugs and errors. Once users migrate to the beta patch, they will keep receiving beta OTA updates. Reverting back to the official OTA version would require full wiping of the smartphone.
For those unaware, the Face Unlock feature by OnePlus doesn’t use any depth sensor and iris scanner like what we’ve seen in the iPhone X. It does, however, use the smartphone’s front-facing camera.
This feature may trickle down to even older smartphones, as hinted by the company co-founder Carl Pei. Pei recently asked in a forum post if users want the Face Unlock feature in the OnePlus 3 and 3T handsets. “You all inspired us to bring Face Unlock to the OnePlus 5. When you share your thoughts and feedback, you impact how we build and maintain our devices. In the spirit of building together, we’d also like to ask our OnePlus 3 and 3T users: Do you want Face Unlock too?” he asked.
On the sidelines, OnePlus 3 and 3T smartphones have popped up in the news for an app that Google Play has labelled as ‘harmful’. Several OnePlus 3 and OnePlus 3T users have reported about Google Play placing FactoryMode as a ‘Harmful app’ ever since the roll out of OxygenOS 5.0.1. The search giant, in the alert card on the smartphone’s screen shows “This app contains code that attempts to bypass Android’s security protections.” It adds that, “Even if you have heard of this app or the app developer, this version of the app could harm your device.”
