Microsoft Surface Laptop with Windows 10 S locks users to Edge browser and Bing

Microsoft recently launched its Surface Laptop , which comes with the new Windows 10 S operating system in tow. But even though it’ll let users access all the apps available on the Windows Store, they’ll be restricted to using just Microsoft’s own Edge browser, as per a report by Ars Technica website.
It has been also mentioned that although users will get the option to download and install other browsers such as Opera Mini, they won’t be able to set them as default. If any HTML file, URL or any other link is tried to be opened, it’ll still open in Microsoft Edge.

The Windows 10 S FAQ page confirms that, “Microsoft Edge is the default web browser on Microsoft 10 S. You are able to download another browser that might be available from the Windows Store, but Microsoft Edge will remain the default if, for example, you open an .htm file. Additionally, the default search provider in Microsoft Edge and Internet Explorer cannot be changed.”

Although this works well on Microsoft’s part, end users are unlikely to appreciate the move.

Windows 10 S was announced by Microsoft at its special #Microsoft EDU event, held in New York on May 2. The new cloud-based OS is a stripped-down version of Windows 10 and is aimed at the educational sector.
Windows 10 S comes with a tweaked login page and a new streamlined wallpaper. Microsoft claims that it takes 15 seconds for Windows 10 S to start up and get ready for the first time use, something that is taken from Windows 10 Pro.
