Lenovo CEO hints arrival of Motorola RAZR

Motorola, in around 2004 was one of the most popular independent smartphone brands across the globe. The tech firm, among other gadgets, was specifically known for one of its handsets – Moto RAZR. The iconic mobile phone was known for its slim design and metallic looks. However, the device faded away from the markets eventually. But it looks like the ‘RAZR’ brand may be revived soon by Lenovo, Motorola’s parent firm.

At the ongoing MWC 2018 conference, when Lenovo CEO Yang Yuanqing was asked about bringing back the iconic Moto RAZR, he replied in a cryptic statement, indicating that the company may just follow the footsteps of HMD and bring back its old yet popular phone. “With the new technology, particularly foldable screens, I think you will see more and more innovation on our smartphone design. So hopefully what you just described (Motorola Razr) will be developed or realized very soon,” he told Techradar. We are still far from getting any kind of confirmation though.

This is not the first time in past couple of years that we have seen the Moto RAZR being teased or hinted. In 2016, Motorola posted a video on YouTube focussing on RAZR and the level of nostalgia it carries along with it.

Last year too CNBC reported that Lenovo is not ruling out the possibility to bring back the RAZR phone. “We should be smart if Motorola fans remember something. If Razr is a good one we should think about how to leverage that,” said Yang in an interview at MWC 2017. “But whatever we bring back, it has to be a stronger product than the original.” Last year Motorola launched the G5 smartphone at MWC but the company was missing from the venue this year. Maybe it has something special lined up for later this year.
