Earlier, indivduals used to enter the user name and the password on the same web page, but now they shall have access to two different web pages for the same. Apparently, we have to enter the user name and press next. Post that, the system re-directs the user to the second page, where they need to enter the password. Hence, they shall be using two steps for authentication, instead of one.
However, users will not be able to use password managers and Google believes that this feature would give birth to new authentication modes to be developed in the future. It is anticipated that these new authentication modes in two steps can be implemented through hardware with an external dongle device or a variant for web browser of the smart lock function which allows Android users to keep their devices unlocked as long as they have a trusted Bluetooth device connected. Google further claims that the change implemented by it would soon end the usual simple password authentication completely.
