Google I/O 2017: Tango-supporting Asus Zenfone AR’s launch details revealed

At its I/O 2017 developers’ conference, Google talked about its efforts in the Virtual Reality and Augmented Reality spaces. During the keynote, the company talked about Project Tango and its importance. In addition, it revealed the timeframe for the launch of the next Project Tango-enabled smartphone – Asus Zenfone AR .
Clay Bavor, VP of Virtual Reality and Augmented Reality at Google, said in a company blogpost, “First unveiled at CES 2017 in Las Vegas, the Asus Zenfone AR will be arriving this summer”.
He further added, “For AR, it can be used to enable smartphone AR experiences by placing digital objects in real spaces. The next phone with Tango technology will be the ASUS ZenFone AR”.
Asus Zenfone AR is the second smartphone to support Google’s Project Tango. The first is Lenovo Phab 2 Pro, which was launched last year.
Project Tango is Google’s Augmented Reality platform that combines 3D motion-tracking along with depth sensors to show AR content. After computing these factors, the AR software overlays texts and graphics on the objects in real life.
Running Android 7.0 Nougat, Zenfone AR sports a 5.7-inch AMOLED WQHD display. It is powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 821 chipset (optimized for Tango) and comes with a vapour cooling system, along with 6GB/8GB of RAM.
Unlike the Lenovo Phab 2 Pro’s four camera setup, the Zenfone AR has three 23MP Sony IMX cameras.
At I/O 2017, it was mentioned that Google will be collaborating with HTC and Lenovo to make standalone VR headsets. The first products will arrive later this year.
