2 biggest reasons why older Apple iPhones become slow

Last week it was reported that users who were experiencing slow performance in their old iPhone devices can solve the problem by simply changing the smartphone’s batteries. Although there were no concrete proof on the issue at that time, Geekbenchfounder John Poole has now tested if it is really the case or not.

What was claimed a week ago

A week ago, one user explained this issue on Reddit. The user talked about the ‘iPhone 6s battery fiasco’ wherein the smartphone switched off even with 40% remaining battery. Apple initially thought that this was not a widespread issue. It even offered battery replacements for some users. However, those users also faced the same ‘unexpected shutdown’ issue in their handsets.

Apple later said a fix is coming in the form of a software update. When the iOS 10.2.1 was rolled out, the Cupertino-based tech firm said that the shutdowns were reduced on iPhone 6s by 80% and 70% on iPhone 6.

Reddit users explained that was because Apple, with iOS 10.2.1, dynamically lowered the maximum clock speed of the processor. This meant that the processor would then use less voltage from the smartphones battery to run. This resulted in less battery consumption but with slower performance.

Geekbench tests

Poole set out to test the iPhone 6s and the iPhone 7 devices to see if the aforementioned issue was a reality or not.

As expected, he did observe that in case of the iPhone 6s, the issue became more pronounced with each iOS update – 10.2.0, 10.2.1 and 11.2.0. In simple words, the tests confirmed the above claims by users. With each update, Apple seemed to have reduced the maximum clock speed of the processor in order to save the smartphones’ degrading battery.

In case of iPhone 7, the performance seemed stable with the iOS 10.2, 10.2.1 and 11.1.2. However, a similar issue started surfacing with iOS 11.2.0.

Poole claims that Apple may have added a ‘software adjustment’ to limit the performance so that the processor doesn’t suck more voltage from the batteries and the handset doesn’t see an unexpected shutdown.

“While this state is created to mask a deficiency in battery power, users may believe that the slow down is due to CPU performance, instead of battery performance, which is triggering an Apple introduced CPU slow-down. This fix will also cause users to think, ‘my phone is slow so I should replace it’ not, ‘my phone is slow so I should replace its battery'” said Poole.
