After months of rumours and false alarms, it looks like the OnePlus 9 is finally coming to town! With the internet flooded with fake leaks and more about the phone, the company itself teased a “moonshot” announcement today. It has revealed the launch date for the OnePlus 9 series, and it also revealed that the OnePlus 9 pro comes with the Hasselblad cameras.
In a tweet directly from their own handle, OnePlus revealed that the phone will be launched on 23rd March at 7:30 PM IST. This is also corroborating with the leaks which specified the presence of the Hasselblad cameras. The company confirmed that they signed a 3-year partnership with Hasselblad to help develop the camera systems for the next-gen OnePlus smartphones. The quad-camera setup will also have Hasselblad branding on it.
The OnePlus x Hasselblad partnership:
Though OnePlus is known for developing one of the best flagship phones in the market, the camera was one area where they were found wanting. While not average, they aren’t great either. The OnePlus CEO Pete Lau also promised to have more focus on smartphone photography to elevate the experience on Weibo, the Chinese social media platform.
The Chinese tech giant has also signed a three-year deal with the camera makers as they look to pump $150 million into their camera research. Over the course of their entire partnership, they want to make themselves the go-to option for smartphone photography.
The investment will also go towards the overall development of four research labs globally – two in Japan and two in the USA.
Flagship features to look forward to:
There are some excellent features to look forward to. There will be a large number of software improvements, including sensor calibration, colour tunings and also upcoming flagships among others.
Sensor: The One Plus 9 will also use a custom Sony IMX789 sensor. The company also refers to it as the most advanced main camera sensor and the largest one for a OnePlus device. It will be able to support 8K@30fps and 4K@120fps for video recording.
Colour calibration: The companies have also worked towards an advanced color calibration for the series. The device will also capture images with a more natural-looking colour tones, which are more accurate. The “Hasselblad Pro Mode” will be able to adjust ISO, exposure times, focus, white balance and more. The 12-bit RAW photo capture is also supported, giving professional photographers the best foundation to edit.
Camera technology: The company will also put forth pioneering camera technologies for their smartphones, which include a 140-degree field of view, T-lens technology, lightning-fast focus and a front-facing camera, along with a freeform lens that will eliminate edge distortion in ultra-wide photographs.
So to conclude, it looks like OnePlus will take on Vivo x Zeiss and Huawei x Leica for Android with their partnership with Hasselblad. Let’s wait till March 23rd to see what’s in store!
