Foldable Samsung ‘Galaxy X’ revealed with a new design in a patent

Samsung ‘Galaxy X’, though far from being launched, has already started making some heads turn. The upcoming device will be Samsung’s first foldable smartphone and has also been confirmed to arrive next month by the company’s mobile chief, DJ Koh. Although nothing else is official about the handset, a new found patent seems to have revealed the design of the upcoming handset.

The design seen in the patent, spotted by Lets Go Digital website, is different and more detailed than the one we’ve seen in the past. While the previous patent filing showed a handset that can be folded from one side and transform from to a tablet to a smartphone, this new patent shows a device that can be folded from the top.
The images shared by the website is said to come from a patent filing from World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO). This time we also see that there is no visible separation at the centre where the handset could have the most impact when folded. We are still not sure how Samsung plans to solve the issue. However if the image is anything to go by, it can be assumed that Samsung will be making its AMOLED display more durable and prone to folds.

Another image shows that the side bezels at the centre part will be flexible. Another point of concern in foldable smartphones is the placement of the battery. Samsung seems to keep the battery on just one side of the smartphone as manufacturing of flexible batteries could be difficult.

Since Samsung has been working on flexible displays ever since 2013 (or before), it is not new to such tech. Samsung first introduced its smartphone with curved screen back in 2013 in the form of Samsung Galaxy Round and since then perfected the concept of dual-curved screen displays. Last year, we had seen the company cutting the bezels on top and bottom in its Galaxy S8. Based on this we can only imagine how the end product may look like when it comes out next year.
